We moved into a new house (we're still in the CA high desert) and the landscape designer has proposed using some amount of woodchip mulch for decorative groundcover purposes. We rejected the idea (due to the fungus issues), but I recently found an article on a rubber-based artificial mulch called "Rubberific Mulch" by International Mulch. They also make rubber-based playground alternatives to woodchip products. I have received some samples and it looks OK, but I'd sure like some input from someone with direct experience.

Has anyone used this stuff?

We use the rubber mulch in our backyard in the playground area. It's great! It comes in all different kinds of colors, so it's a lot more fun than just brown bark. We've had the blue color for about a year now (it replaced the wooden bark that used to be there). My son, Owen has played in it and hasn't gotten any infection so far. I think it makes sense that the rubber mulch is safer than the wooden bark since wood is much more conducive to fungal growth than rubber. Hope this helps.
